Underfloor heating is becoming more popular in residential and commercial properties throughout the UK. Installing underfloor heating (UFH) on a first floor often means juggling floor heights, weight limits, and performance. That’s where thin flowing screeds come into their own – and at Cempump, we’ve got the experience and the products to get it right.

This blog looks at why using thin screeds over underfloor heating is a smart solution.

Why Choose a Thin Screed?

Lightweight – Thin screeds will help to reduce the structural load, particularly on suspending or timber flooring. This makes thin screed a safer option as opposed to traditional, heavier screeds. Sand and cement weigh significantly more than thin screed, which puts pressure on the floor joists. This could make the structure sag and cause damage to the flooring.

Despite being much thinner and lighter, thin scrreds are still highly effective. These screeds allow heat to travel evenly from the pipes to the floor, which improves the energy efficiency of underfloor heating.

Low build-ups – Laid as thin as 20mm over UFH pipes, thin screed is ideal for keeping floor levels on spec. This means it is easy to have underfloor heating installed without floor height changes that could lead to structural changes or even hazards.

Fast heat-up – Thin screeds have a low thermal mass. Less thermal mass means a quicker response, leading to more comfort and better efficiency all round. Traditional screed is often thick with high thermal mass, meaning it takes a long time to warm up and cool down. This can lead to a slow, hard-to-control system. This fast response time not only increases comfort by giving you heat when you need it but also improves energy efficiency, as the system doesn’t waste energy constantly trying to maintain a high temperature in a massive slab.

Quick installation – Our team can finish the screed process in hours, making the surface walkable within 24–48 hours, depending on the area we are working with. The screed quickly covers vast areas with minimal labour or mess, unlike traditional cement or sand screeds that are generally messier and take longer.
